The carefully conceived
illustrations of Jody Hewgill
I always pause when I come upon an illustration by Jody Hewgill. They are beautiful, but not shallow. They are representational with a twist. They are conceptual without being too cerebral. Her use of color is clear and informed. They make you look, and they make you think. They have mood, but are not moody. And they can be starkly honest. Jody says she likes to work on material that examines the human condition, which she does beautifully without wallowing in the depths of despair. For this post, she submitted a powerful image of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., originally created in color, which she converted to black and white in honor of Black Lives Matter.

Quote (from her acceptance speech, Society of Illustrators)
"As illustrators our biggest nemesis is self doubt. Receiving my first medal earlier in my career put some air under my wings: it gave me validation. Just having one’s artwork in this show is an amazing feat because it has become so competitive; there are so, so many great pieces entered and limited wall space to exhibit them. Receiving this gold medal now, after 25 years of illustrating is profoundly meaningful to me. It’s not easy sustaining such a long career, but I’m more energized and passionate about illustration now than ever before. I think THIS
is the golden age of Illustration. Each and every one of YOU inspire me. The
bar of excellence keeps being raised and all of YOU inspire me to reach further.
So thank YOU! "
